Stress Related Pain

Stress and anxiety can be physical. If you are stressed or anxious a lot, you may develop high blood pressure, diabetes, acid reflux, or other conditions. Muscle and joint pain is also known as stress related pain.

The most common stress related pain include:

Fifty-five percent of Americans report feeling stressed at the end of the day. That’s no surprise considering how busy our lives are today. Stress is part of life, but is not just a nuisance. Chronic stress actually causes these symptoms and conditions.

Headaches and Migraines. You might notice muscle tension in your neck, face, shoulders, and upper back. If muscles are tight for a prolonged period of time, it may lead to tension headaches or migraines.

Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ). Jaw muscles can contribute to TMJ and worsen it. TMD can cause jaw pain, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing your mouth, and difficulty chewing.

Lower back pain. Tight muscles can eventually pull on the vertebrae in your back causing a subluxation. Posture can also be a cause of misalignment. Muscle strains are easier to occur in some cases. If the nerves are compressed, you will feel pain in your arms or legs.

Nausea. Stress can cause heartburn and stomach pain. At least 35% of people will experience some form of functional gastrointestinal disorders at some point in their lives. They cause discomfort and other symptoms despite being unrelated to any physical cause. If you already have a gastrointestinal disease (GERD, IBS, or another condition), stress can worsen your condition.

Chronic stress can cause inflammation, irritate nerves, and cause blood circulation problems. When you are stressed, your body increases cortisol production. Cortisol, known as the “fight or flight” hormone, is involved in dealing with threat or change. Your cortisol level may drop if you are chronically stressed. Your cortisone level is low, making it more difficult to manage pain.
